Are you looking for fashion inspiration, but can only find outfits look like this?
Or this ill fitting one?
In my late teenage years I was trying to improve my style. I figured I was going to be an adult soon and should dress like one. After searching online, I’d find ridiculous photos of generic muscly looking guys leaning on really fancy cars in fancy suits or in really ill fitting clothing. I really tried to emulate these men until I got ridiculed for trying to wear suits to 2nd period math class. Luckily, I eventually shed that thought and found my sense of style. If you’re in the same boat I was, here are some Instagram accounts I’ve used or am using to find fashion inspiration.
1. chrismehan | Chris Mehan
Chris’ account is at the top of my list because his account is incredibly helpful at learning how to dress. It gives a really good understanding of color and pattern combination. There’s no fancy gimmicks or filters here. You’ll see how different pants look with the same shirt or vice versa. Another thing I love about his account is that the designs/color of his shirts, pants and shoes are pretty common. This means you might already have similar items in your closet or should have no problem finding it at your local department store. Plus, he does one big recap of his outfits (like the one below) so you don’t miss anything.
2. effortlessgent | Barron
I like a couple things about Barron. The first thing that I appreciate is his range of style. He is able to rewear the same coat in different ways to give completely different looks. He does a lot of solid color, but also a lot of patterns. There are casual, weekend, business, and semi-formal outfits. The second thing is that he is also critical of alot of these very generic outfits of those men in tight fitting clothes like the one I mentioned above.
3. ericnycstyle | Eric Rodriguez
He is extremely good at layering his clothing. I thought I was good at layering, but he takes it to another level. You’ll see the same jacket appear multiple times with different things underneath. It takes a lot of creativity to create different outfits from the same jacket. I also can’t grow facial hair so I am amazed by his and how he’s able to keep it so well groomed.
4. modestmanstyle | Brock McGoff
I’m the same height as Brock which is extremely helpful. There’s a lot of helpful tips on how to dress when you’re our height. There are recommendations on what brands are best and how to wear certain things. Like the username suggests, the outfits are modest and not too flashy, but still impressive. If you want some in depth guides or just really more on how to dress, you can also check out his blog.
5. thegentwithin | Khoi N.
Similar to the previous other accounts, most of Khoi’s outfits are casual enough for everyday wear, but there are some that are just a little more formal. “Formal” might not be the best word, but I say that because he wears more blazer, sports jackets, suits and ties compared to the previous others. Because of that, it’s an excellent account to start learning those articles of clothing. An added bonus is that they also come in some really good colors. If the Instagram isn’t enough, check out his blog here.
6. Threadability | David Komisarchik
I like David’s use of bright colors and vibrant patterns. It’s hard to pull off bright red pants or a floral print button up without trying to be too loud. He does have your more neutral colors like black, dark blue, grey, and brown so it’s a good balance of different kinds of styles. You get to see a range of styles and colors. Just good overall fashion sense. He also has a YouTube channel if you’re trying to learn a little more
7. iammrmartinez | Ivan Martinez
If you’re trying to find different things to wear with a blazer, suit jacket, leather jacket or denim jacket then look no further. There’s so many great things to wear with them and Ivan shows off a lot of them. Long ago are the day of just wearing a button up and tie under a suit jacket or blazer. I’m aso big fan that he sometimes wears sneakers with his suits. I do the same thing. Another cool thing is that he has a YouTube channel that’s also in spanish.
8. timdessant | Tim Dessant
Tim Dessaint has a certain aesthetic to the way he dresses that I can’t really put words to. It’s a bit minimalistic but at the same time it’s not. What I actually learn from the way he dresses is how he wears lighter colors, like light grey and white. It’s surprisingly difficult to figure out what colors to wear with white. So many of his outfits contain the basic white tee which is huge because you’ll learn different ways to style it. In the end, hopefully you’ll learn how to take that white tee a step further.
9. theaestheticminimalist: Val Lin
I think this is the only one on my list that is dedicated to more than just fashion. His Instagram is like a Muji store. All of his outfits are simple yet effective. I like how he also promotes a minimalist lifestyle. It goes to show that you can put together different outfits and looks with a small closet. What’s also great is just the photography and color balance in his photos.
10. johnphilp3 | John Philp Thompson III
I put him last but not least because his style is a little bit of everything. It’s undefined and I love that. It ranges from loungewear, to casual to athletic to formal wear and everything in between. There’s bright colors, print and other things I love. The pictures are fun and it’s cool to be able to recognize where everything was taken in NYC.
